SIXth graders

This series was initially inspired by a group of 12 year olds in an elementary school where I was invited to talk about what it’s like to be a professional photographer. I quickly noticed that many kids had cell phones and made them realize that they could all be photographers if they wanted to.  This conference resulted in a 6 week workshop where I was able to witness how today’s children are greatly influenced by technology and mass media. Throughout the process, it became easier for me to gain their trust and full collaboration. This resulted in a series of 7 collaborative portraits where they were asked to participate in the image-making process in order to achieve an image they thought was representative of them. With this project, not only do I want to document how technology and mass media are influencing our current generation of sixth graders, but I also want to educate them on the importance of photography as a powerful tool to share information in an artistic and conceptual way.
